Special Feature: Lumsden Odyssey - The Women of James Street

The Women of James Street

By Lynn Larson Armstrong

L-‐R: Jody Beaudry, Breanne Dmytriw, Deanna Perry, Shelly Korchinski, Sarah Kowalchuk, Gloria Korchinski, Lesia Matheson, Twila Parcher, Shannon Kaytor, Paulette Kaytorf

I went on an odyssey, in search of the places where the land meets the sky, where souls are renewed in the warmth of the summer sun, where people embody the spirit of past pioneers, and the entrepreneurs of the present and future. With Bon Jovi’s “Lost Highway” blasting, I hit the open road. I don’t have to go very far before I have to stop and take in the beauty of what I can see. Fifteen minutes from north Regina off Highway 11 is Lumsden.

Immediately I feel at home. I am drawn in by the inspiring sunrise, the warm summer air, the horizon of green trees that will soon turn a beautiful shade of red before the leaves are whisked away by the wind, and the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. It was there that I met the women of James Street, who embody the dream of living well in Saskatchewan. I am pleased to introduce you to them.

Wildflower Esthetics & Sugar Studio

Deanna Perry, Owner
Natural, clean and classy are the first words that come to mind as you enter Deanna Perry’s private spa nestled in a heritage building on James Street, Lumsden.

Through every treatment you experience at Wildflower, you will feel the peacefulness and serenity that Deanna holds dear to the Lumsden Valley where she grew up and still lives.

Eminence, a handmade organic skin care line from Hungary, is used in all services and retailed as well.
“It is like the clean eating of skincare,” Deanna explains. “Their moisturizers are full of vitamins and nutrients extracted from the fruits and vegetables that are used in their making. Aging doesn’t stand a chance against nature’s combinations like pear and poppy seed, strawberry rhubarb, gooseberry and black currant, cucumber mint, key lime and vanilla, which are infused in the Eminence serums, cleansers, masques and exfoliants.”

Body sugaring hair removal, another one of Deanna’s passions, is also done naturally, using only water, sugar and lemon juice.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness at Wildflower. In her desire to take her client’s well being to a higher level, all instruments and tools are cleaned using a statim, a sterilizing unit that dentists use to clean their instruments and tools. If it can’t be cleaned in the statim, it is disposed of.
Indulge in the finest facials, pedicures, manicures, and body treatments at Wildflower Esthetics & Sugar Studio or treat somebody with a gift certificate. Visit the website or call to book ahead before your next excursion to Lumsden, and prepare to bask in Eminence.

From Burgers to Billboards and Beyond: The CDN Story

The story of how a burger baron’s son is changing the sky.

James McDonnell, President and CEO, Canadian Digital Network

James McDonnell began with an idea to sell burgers and fries at his family-owned restaurant, the Burger Baron in Regina. He installed a digital billboard to improve marketing for the restaurant and create an additional revenue stream.

The idea mushroomed as four more sign owners came to the table.  Todd Mintz, Reg Howard, Rob Thomson, Jason Degelman and James McDonnell now share a common vision to develop a digital billboard network.

James is the President and CEO of Canadian Digital Network, a Saskatchewan based digital placement company with a unique networked approach to digital advertising wherever the network exists.

“We strive to revolutionize the way the billboard industry works. Our goal is to be Saskatchewan’s dominant player in digital media”.  The CDN approach is a game changer in the digital signage business.  Individual sign owners come together to share their assets, create a strategically connected advertising system and generate returns based on the performance of the system.

“We invited people who model our principles of integrity, commitment and transparency to join the network. In December 2012, we acquired Digital Skies, becoming the largest digital billboard company in the province, with over 60 locations in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Weyburn, Yorkton and other rural markets."

Owning a sign is a business unto itself.  First there is the cost of buying the sign, which can be up to $250,000, then there is set up and maintenance. Once the sign is up and running, it needs content, so the owner then must become adept at selling advertising on their sign, managing relationships and contracts, and tracking performance. The CDN approach goes beyond creating the network. They also serve the network.

“When the sign is fully running with paid advertising, it is a revenue stream".

Meet the team.

Once a sign owner joins the network, the CDN Team goes to work for clients taking care of sales, production, graphics, diagnostics and logistics on behalf of the network.

"We are proud to welcome Bev Dubois to our team. She is helping us to develop a stronger presence in the Saskatoon market place."

James McDonnell, Lorne Piett, Kelly Forsberg, Drew Renwick, Chris Pagan, Gabe Rosescu

"With the Grey Cup later this year, we are anticipating the skies will be lit up.  Give us a call to get your name up in lights."

Publisher's Recommendation:

SKY Magazine is proud to "Be Seen" on the Canadian Digital Network, on Saskatchewan Drive and Cameron Street.  Thank you CDN team for your professionalism and attention to detail. I love my sign.

NWL: Dreaming of Dresses on Hamilton

To walk through the doors of NWL on 1853 Hamilton is to walk onto the canvas of an impressionist artist awaiting your arrival. The bright white walls are adorned with an endless palette of color, sparkle, and texture.

She walks along the rows of dresses, touching the fabrics, letting them roll off her fingertips.  She can’t help but imagine the stories that are yet to be lived in each dress.

She imagines being a bride in a dreamy white gown, the soft fabric draping over her body, wistfully dancing off the ground with each step that she takes toward her future. She studies her silhouette with a discriminating eye, lost in the moment of what’s possible in this dress.

A sequined blue sapphire dress catches her eye, calling out to her for her special night with her special someone this New Years Eve. Ball gowns of brightly colored taffeta dance against the wall, awaiting their special someone to bring them to life on the night of her life.

“I love dresses, but more than that, I love seeing the joy they bring to my clients. It’s like all their hopes and dreams come to life when they see themselves in a gown”, says Nadia Williamson, owner.

NWL is a vision of beauty, a canvas where splashes of color and texture come together to create the stuff of which dreams are made.

The NWL experience is influenced by Nadia’s love for impressionist art and the movie industry, where fashion brings stories to life on screen and in life.

Nadia studied costume design at the University of Regina and later studied fashion, arts and design at LaSalle College in Montreal.  She launched her career as a fashion designer in the movie industry for more than 10 years.

Six years ago, she opened the doors of NWL, bringing her love of fashion to life in Regina where she was born and raised.

"Each and every dress is a work of art unto itself."

“These dresses need to be architecture. The craftsmanship and the detail that goes into creating these dresses is nothing short of amazing.  The designers know a woman’s body and how to FIT it.

They know us and how we want to feel when we step into an evening gown, a wedding dress or a cocktail dress.”

“What I love more than the dresses are my customers.  The relationship that we share when we are helping them find the perfect dress for an important event in their lives is what feeds me daily.  The beautiful dresses are like ice cream on a perfect cake."

Visiting NWL is always a new experience.  Each day the window is redressed to tell the story of a fantasy so that passers-by can catch a glimpse of these beautiful dresses.

“When we get new dresses in the store, it’s like Christmas. We love imagining who could wear the dresses and what kind of event they would be worn at.  Each dress is unique – there are no two the same."

"We are not the highest priced dresses in the city; we just look like we are. The store has a very “New York” feel to it, but that’s the atmosphere we want to create. The NWL experience is brought to life by a team who are dedicated to creating the best experience possible.

“I especially want to thank my team, most of whom have been here from the beginning with me.  Amanda, Leslie and Teagan have been with me for five years.  Kayla, Nicole and Alex have been with me for two years.  I am so lucky to have such a committed and creative group of people.

We ask that our customers book an appointment so that we can dedicate ourselves to giving personalized service. We try to recommend the dresses that are going to be the best fit so they can have the most positive experience”.

“When you come to NWL, we want you to play. To explore. To laugh and to fall in love."
