An Act of God and the 13th Man

It's Grey Cup week here in the land under sun.  A fresh coat of soft, sparkling snow has fallen upon us, but despite the white stuff that is covering the land, we are green through and through.

It all started last Sunday when the Saskatchewan Roughriders (miraculously) won in Calgary against the Stampeders. I was writing a presentation on risk management and CEO succession while the game was playing in our family room.  The TV was loud enough that I could hear it.  My husband was tucked downstairs in his wine making room, listening to the blaring television from a safe distance, praying that his beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders would win the game.  (He believes that if he watches the game, they will lose).  A true Rider fan, he keeps a safe distance to give his team a fighting chance.

My Facebook page was open while I was working, so my friends and family commentators kept me in the loop. My sister in BC commented - "I am liking what I see . . .", and then the half time status - 22 - 6 for the Riders!  I called out to my husband to tell him they are winning, and he said - "I don't want to know!"

He was right. The third quarter was upon us and that's when things start to fall apart on the field quite often.  But not this day.  This day was a notable victory.  The one that would take us to the promised land of the Grey Cup.

"They did everything right," sports icon George Reed said to me.

Something came over us that day when we won in Calgary. We were hosting the Grey Cup and planning the party of the year, as we always do, but something shifted in Riderville, sort of like when the Grinch's heart grew 10 times its size.  We are inspired.

Yesterday my 76 year old dad, the original 13th man, phoned me desperately looking for a Grey Cup ticket.  A season ticket holder all his life, he was not able to get a ticket.  I posted a call for help on Facebook and my friends shared with their friends, and before I knew it, a family was offering their fourth ticket to my dad, inviting him to attend the game with them.

Meanwhile, my dad called the Mosaic Stadium Box Office in a last attempt to buy a ticket, and there was one ticket left, and it was waiting for him. He told me there was more to the story than luck.  He  had been sharing his woes of possibly missing the biggest game ever and his friend said, "leave it to God."  My dad told me, "I don't like to do that all the time, especially when He may not care that I am watching the game on TV or in the stands.  So I called, and it was there, waiting for me."

Snow or no snow. The sun is shining here in the land under the sun, and the 13th man will be there once again, and the stands will be green.

I've got men on my mind. SKY Magazine's White Issue will be launched at Dean Renwick's Moustache Bash at the Mercedes Show room in Regina on November 30,

SKY Magazine is proud to be a sponsor for the Moustache Bash,hosted by Dean Renwick.  It is a blue carpet event to raise funds for the Prostate Assessment Centre and to launch Dean Renwick's new line.

The event will be loads of fun for men and women.  Men will be able to choose an original Dean Renwick bow tie to finish their ensemble.

For women, Dean is giving us the gift of a clean-shaven man.  Ragged Ass Barbers and Hotel Saskatchewan Barber Shop will be shaving off the moustaches and beards of Movember.

The White Issue is also a special issue for me, as it will be the anniversary edition, marking the the full first year of publishing SKY Magazine.

We all remember well the 2012 White Issue, featuring the beautiful Nadia Williamson, owner of NWL Dress Shop in Regina, standing out in a snow covered field under a perfect powder blue winter sky, wearing a Pronovias gown.

On that day, as Nadia stepped into onto the field, putting her hand to her hair, and looking up to the sky as we all do, I knew that I was doing exactly what I should be doing. I have never looked back, and I have loved every single issue with all my heart.

The 2013 White Issue - Anniversary Edition - will be special as it will celebrate the men in our lives and their health and well being.

I can't wait for you to see it. It will take your breath away.

Falling for Red.

It was November 2012 that I first met Lorelei Johns after becoming the new publisher of SKY Magazine.  She told me all about the four legged love of her life, Red, and how he was instrumental in her business as an accountant serving non-profit organizations.

Since then, Horse Sense has been a regular part of SKY Magazine, and we have grown to look forward to Red's stories. 

With each issue, Red's antics make their way into the story.

"My horse Red inspires me. He is a 5 year-old, 590 kilogram gelding who at times, challenges my leadership, especially when we disagree on things like direction and strategy," she shared in the December 2012 White Issue. In the White Issue 2012, we photographed Lorelei with her saddle, capturing the free spirit that is Lorelei.

In the Spring 2012 issue,  she said, "Red was dreaming of warm days when he could freely move about in the sun filled green pasture with the herd.  Even in the world of horses, dreaming leads to action."  The temperature on the day of shooting the Spring SKY was minus 48 degrees Celsius. (Not even kidding). Needless to say, Red could not make his debut that day.

The summer was soppy here in Saskatchewan and so Red's moment in the sun had to wait yet again.  Lorelei's Horse Sense blog was inspired by her family, which includes Red, whom she said "teaches [her] about building relationships and being the kind of person I aspire to be."

I have loved sitting across the table over a cup of coffee hearing about Red and the things he does. But what I love more is watching Lorelei light up when she talks about this magnificent being.

In the making of the fall issue, now known as the "Red Issue", we were invited out to Red's stable just outside of Regina to photograph Lorelei with him. It was easy to see why she loves him so, and that he loves her too.

He is a charmer.  When we arrived, Lorelei took me over Red's pasture, and he came trotting over when he saw her, kind of like a big dog.  I put my hand out for him and placed his forehead into the palm of my hand. We were friends immediately.

Watching Lorelei with Red, it was plain to see how important they are to each other.  Here are some photos that I took with my iPhone that day, just capturing some of these special moments that happen in the making of SKY Magazine. I feel grateful to be a part of Lorelei and Red's journey.

Excuse me while I kiss the sky: District Brewing Company Launches "THE LEGEND OF MÜS KNUCKLE"

Tonight over 400 people gathered to celebrate District Brewing Company, Regina's first and only locally owned Brewery, launching its Mus Knuckle Premium Pale Lager tonight at the Orr Centre in Regina.  

The band, Mirror Imij - the Jimi Hendrix Experience from Las Vegas flew in to celebrate this momentous occasion at the Orr Centre in the George Reed Auditorium.  Mirror Imij sang all the great songs, including my personal favourite, Watch Tower.

Housed in Regina’s Warehouse District on 1375 Broad Street will be the Regina Civic Museum, featuring a curated collection of Regina’s history since our inception. 


There are pieces of the original Albert Street Bridge, collections from the majestic 1500-seat Capitol Theatre built in 1921 that once stood on the corner of 12th and Scarth, a fur press, and thousands of other artifacts that tell our story.

“The largest piece in our collection is the steam locomotive now sitting at

Casino Regina.The smallest articles are stamps and pieces of jewelry. The collection tells us stories about whom we are and how we came to be where we are ,” says Shari Sokochoff, Executive Director.

“There are amazing pieces that celebrate the beauty of our city, as well as give memory to the dark days. The Museum is home to the large stained glass window, which is the largest surviving artifact of

the Knox Presbyterian Church that was damaged in the Regina Cyclone of 1912.”

The initiative to re-invent the museum began in March 2012, when the Board of Directors of the then Regina Plains Museum established a new strategic direction to become Regina’s civic museum, preserving and representing the history of our city. The new direction was approved by City Council, recognizing the Regina Civic Museum as a community partner and a core functional organization in the city.

“As the city grows and evolves, it will be important for those who shared in the creation of our city from its inception to revisit these artifacts and what they mean to them. For new comers to our city, the Regina Civic Museum will be the place to learn about the city they now call home.”
